Suburbium
Suburbium
The historic Jewish Quarter – Jewish Suburb – an example of historic Jewish community life in Bardejov, was built in the early 19th century according to Talmudic guidelines and includes:
- Old synagogue
- Beit Hamidrash
- Mikvah
Nearby, on the site where the supermarket stands today, there once stood a Jewish slaughterhouse.
UNESCO included the area in its nomination of Bardejov as a World Heritage Site for "its cultural and historical significance."
The old synagogue was renovated and opened to the public in July 2017. Beith Hamidrash was recently vacated and is in the process of planning for restoration and the establishment of a cultural and educational center and museum.
The mikvah, which until recently served as a building supplies store, is now closed. We hope that the mikvah will also be restored in the near future, so that the Jewish Suburbia can be preserved in its entirety as a recognition and memorial to the Jewish communities that participated in the social, economic and cultural life of Bardejov throughout its history.
- The impressive Bardejov Holocaust Memorial, adjacent to the Jewish suburb, was ceremonially dedicated in June 2014 and is open to the public.
