Old synagogue
Old synagogue is the oldest and most famous building in the Jewish Quarter. Its construction began in 1829 and was completed in 1836We know this thanks to an inscription that was preserved in the men's section of the synagogue. This inscription says that the construction of the synagogue was started by Joseph Guttman, and after his death it was completed by his son-in-law. It also gives a specific date – Elul 14, 1836, which corresponds to month of August.
The synagogue is built in Baroque and neoclassical styleIt is unique in that it belongs to the synagogues with nine vaults – only preserved in Slovakia two such synagogues, the second is located in Stupava. On ceiling and vaults we can see beautiful paintings in Moorish style.
In the middle men's prayer hall is located bimawhich are surrounded by four pillarsIn the eastern part of the room is located ark of the Torah (Hebrew: aron ha-kodesh)Upon entering the synagogue, one can notice that it is built lower than surrounding buildings – the reason is that in the past, Jewish buildings could not exceed Christian ones.
The synagogue also includes small study and women's gallery, which is located in western part buildings. Most Jewish families were orthodox, therefore their religious buildings were also built according to Orthodox precepts. Entrance to the women's gallery led through neoclassical portico, which has not been preserved. During the reconstruction, a new portico.
The building has 12 windowswhich symbolize the twelve tribes of IsraelAbove the windows on east side there are two quotes from Old Testament.
After the Second World War, the Jewish community in Bardejov was almost completely destroyed, although those who returned tried to restore their religious life, it was difficult.

Synagogue gradually dilapidated. Until year 2010 served as hardware store.
In November 2014 were from sources EEA and Norwegian grants allocated funds in the amount of 617,000 euroswhich were assigned The Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in the Slovak Republic (UZZNO) for the restoration of the Old Synagogue.
The reconstruction began in year 2015 in June 2017 was Renovated synagogue ceremonially opened to the public.
