Jewish cemetery

The Jewish cemetery in Bardejov is located on Ľudovíta Štúr Street. It covers an area of 654 m² and contains 1,288 graves from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The oldest preserved grave, marked with number 1082, dates from 1796.

The oldest part of the cemetery lies to the north, by a small stream. Most of the tombstones are made of sandstone and have a semicircular shape. Many of the inscriptions are now difficult to read. An interesting feature of the cemetery were the colorful tombstones in shades of yellow, green, blue, red and their various combinations. The tombstones of the rabbis were usually black with gold or yellow inscriptions. This unique style was influenced by the Jewish communities in Galicia and was probably brought to Bardejov by the Halberstamm rabbinical dynasty from the Polish city of Nowy Sącz.

Many tombstones also have symbolic decorations - lions, deer, birds, crowns, candlesticks, and on newer graves, the Star of David or the weeping willow often appear. Hands in a gesture of blessing mark the graves of the priestly family Kohanim, while jugs symbolize the Levites.

In the center of the cemetery is a small brick structure (Hebrew: ohel) in which Rabbi Moshe Halberstamm (1848–1903), his wife Rachel Fajga, and their son Rabbi Yechiel Natan (1866–1934) are buried.

The cemetery was renovated between 2005 and 2009 – the tombstones were repaired, a new fence was built and the ohel was renovated. The work was financed by the descendants of the Bardejov Jewish community, the Committee for the Protection of Jewish Heritage in Bardejov and the HFPJC Avoysein Foundation. Today, the cemetery is in good condition and its regular maintenance is provided by the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia in cooperation with the local administrator.
