Our Mission
RESTORE, EDUCATE, AND COMMEMORATE Jewish cultural heritage in the town of Bardejov and its surroundings—as a memory of the once significant Jewish community that was destroyed during the Holocaust.
The Story and Vision
Before World War II, Jews made up as much as 40% of the population in Bardejov and its region. The town was home to a vibrant religious and cultural Jewish community that contributed significantly to its development. This community was tragically annihilated during the Holocaust—more than 3,000 Jewish residents were deported to the ghetto and to concentration and extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Poland. By 1948, only 250 Jews remained in Bardejov.Today, there is no longer an active Jewish community in the town.
Emil A. Fishfounder of BJPC, returned to his hometown in 2005 after more than 50 years. Upon seeing the neglected cemetery and deteriorating synagogues, he decided to act. Using his own resources, he began restoring these sites as a tribute to those who once lived, prayed, and died there. In 2006, he established BJPC,and a decade later, our local Slovak partner— the Bardejov Jewish Heritage Foundation—was founded. .
